Peyronie's Disease

Getting an erection can be a painful experience for men with Peyronie’s disease. A build-up of scar tissue causes a significant curve in the shape of the penis, making erections difficult and painful. If left untreated, Peyronie’s disease can negatively impact your sex life and cause depression or anxiety.

Signs of Peyronie’s Disease

  • Flat lumps or bands of hard tissue under the skin of the penis (scar tissue)
  • Unusual penis shape, usually curved or an hourglass shape
  • Reduced penis length
  • Problems getting or maintaining an erection (ED)
  • Pain with or without an erection, which may resolve on its own over time

Possible Causes of Peyronie’s Disease

  • Damage to the penis during sex
  • Penile injury during sports
  • Other injury or trauma to the penis
  • Poor wound healing
  • Family history of Peyronie’s disease
  • Connective tissue disorders, like Dupuytren's contracture
  • Smoking
  • Surgery for prostate cancer
  • Aging

Treatment Options

  • Medication to break down scar tissue / collagen
  • Shock wave therapy (also breaks down scar tissue)
  • Penile traction therapy to stretch the penis
  • Surgery to straighten the penis
  • Surgical removal of scar tissue and grafting
  • Penile implant
  • Penile pump / vacuum device
